I love all things skin care. I love shopping for products (keep an eye out for a how-to guide coming soon!), trying different things, and finding ways to make my skin look and feel its absolute best. It’s gotten to the point where sometimes in the middle of the day, I get the urge to do my full skin care routine because I find it so fun!
Skin care is especially important when it starts to get colder outside. The bitter cold can dry your skin, dull your glow, and exacerbate already-existing skin issues. I don’t know about you, but I’d personally love to avoid these problems! Even though winter doesn’t officially begin until later this month, I made some changes to my skin care routine the second I felt the temperature drop. Keep reading to see what my routine looks like now!
Immediately after I brush my teeth in the morning, I wash my face with a moisture-and glow-inducing cleanser. I’ve been using Olay Cleansing Infusion Facial Cleanser with Deep Sea Kelp for a few months now and I’ve been so happy with the results! It uses sea kelp and aloe vera extracts to help calm and nourish the skin, making it glow despite the harsh winter cold.
Update, December 21, 2018: Just a few days after I posted this, I ran out of my Olay face wash. I decided to use that as an opportunity to try something new. I switched to Pacifica’s Pineapple Cleanse Oil Slaying Face Wash. It straight up smells like summer time and leaves my skin feeling soft and oil-free!
After I cleanse, I use a cotton pad to apply Thayers Alcohol-Free Rose Petal Witch Hazel Toner all over my face. This toner helps remove any remaining oil, dirt or toxins from your face, and also helps keep moisture in and oil away. I’ve been using this product for years and I absolutely love the way it feels and smells.
Next, I apply Burt’s Bees Intense Hydration Eye Cream with Clary Sage. Many people wait to use eye cream until they’re a little older to start using eye cream, but it’s actually really important to start using it in your 20s because the skin under your eyes ages 5-10 years faster than the rest of your skin. During the winter, I use a hydrating cream because that area tends to get very dry, but during other seasons, I might have other goals to focus on, such as puffiness or darkness.
My next step is to apply a serum to my skin. In the morning, I like to use Advanced Clinicals Vitamin C Anti-Aging Serum. It’s a great product to help you look glowing, awake and freshen in the AM. It also helps diminish the appearance of dark spots and even out your skin tone.
After I let the serum soak into my skin for a few minutes, I finish my routine with moisturizer. Moisturizer is likely the thickest product in your arsenal, so you want to make sure to put it on last to get the best effect and to lock in everything else you’ve put on. I like to use a moisturizer that’s refreshing and has SPF, because even though you’re not spending as much time in the sun as you might in other seasons, it’s still best to protect yourself from possible damage. I love anything with pink grapefruit (citrus scents are my favorite!), so I use Yes to Grapefruit Correct & Repair Even Skin Tone Moisturizer. It is SPF 15 and also helps reenforce the benefits of the Vitamin C serum. The thing with this product is that a little goes a really long way. It applies a lot like sunscreen, usually leaving a white sheen on my face. This is fine if I’m putting makeup on over it, but if I’m not, I try to apply the moisturizer on at least 15 minutes before I leave because it’ll give it enough time to soak into my skin.
After a long day, I seriously can’t wait to take care of my skin! My first step is to remove any makeup I might be wearing. I’ve used a lot of different makeup removers in the past, but my current favorite is Yes to Grapefruit Correct & Repair Rejuvenating Facial Wipes. I think they do the best job of pulling every little piece of makeup, gunk and dirt off my face, plus they smell and feel great! If my makeup is being extra stubborn, I’ll use some toner to get rid of those last few traces.
Once my makeup is gone, I use Pacifica’s Kale Detox Deep Cleansing Face Wash. It’s full of super greens like kale and seaweed that help draw toxins out of your skin to keep it fresh and healthy. What better way to cleanse your face after a long day? I usually follow this up with toner and eye cream, too, just like I do after I cleanse in the AM.
My next step is Yes to Grapefruit Pore Perfection Night Treatment (can you guys tell I love this brand?). This treatment goes on thick like a moisturizer, but uses additional ingredients like lilac extract, tea tree oil and extra vitamin C to reduce the appearance of pores. That has always been one of my biggest skin concerns, so I’m really glad I found this product! After I let the night treatment soak in a bit, I follow it up with my Vitamin C serum again.
The last step of my PM skin care routine is moisturizing. At night, I like to use Alba Botanica Hawaiian Oil-Free Refining Aloe & Green Tea Moisturizer. It’s gentle, light and totally refreshing. I think it’s the perfect last skin-care touch before bedtime.
Aside from my daily skin care routine, I also have products that I use a few times during the week.
Once a week, I exfoliate to remove all the dead skin and toxins from my skin to prevent blemishes and blackheads from forming. I’ve been using Burt’s Bees Peach & Willow Bark Deep Pore Scrub for the last few weeks and I have been quite happy with the feel, smell and results. The willow bark is used to exfoliate the skin and the peach stone helps polish it for a glowing complexion. What I really like about this exfoliator is that it doesn’t contain synthetic microbeads, which are known to be bad for the environment, like many other exfoliators and scrubs do. I am still cautious about exfoliating too frequently, though, because any texture particles can cause an exorbitant amount of skin-damaging abrasion. I also recently started following up my exfoliator with my Pacifica cleanser thanks to an article I read from Shape Magazine. This order can help promote skin cell renewal and a deeper clean.
My other not-daily skin care product is, of course, face masks. I try to do between two and five a week, which is actually okay if you’re cautious about the type of mask you use. I’ve been really into sheet masks this season because they’re moisturizing and so easy to use. Yes to Grapefruit Vitamin C Glow-Boosting Bubbling Paper Mask has been one of my favorites (surprise, surprise). It left my skin looking bright and feeling soft.
I also loved Flawless by Friday’s Five Day Mask System, which has dedicated masks with specific goals for five full days straight! The masks felt great and worked even better. Use code TTASTEFUL20 for 20% off your Flawless by Friday purchase!
Another current favorite is the Yes to Tomatoes Detoxifying Charcoal SnapMASK Stick. It only takes five minutes and is so easy to use. It made my skin feel super smooth for days!
And that’s my winter-time skin care routine! I’ve been really happy with the way my skin looks and feels these days. What skin care products do you use when Jack Frost starts nipping at your nose?
